What general tailoring means
General tailoring is the alteration, repair or adjustment of an existing garment to improve how it fits, hangs or functions.
It differs from bespoke tailoring, which makes a new garment from an individually drafted pattern, and from dressmaking, which constructs a garment from scratch. Neither is offered here.
Work ranges from shortening trousers or replacing a button through to taking in a lined dress or reshaping a jacket. A garment does not have to be bridalwear or luxury formalwear to be worth altering — everyday clothing, workwear and occasion outfits are all assessed the same way.

Is your garment suitable for alteration?
Hemming, taking in, sleeve shortening, zip replacement and button work are usually possible on suitable garments. Letting out, shoulder reshaping, extensive resizing and work on embellished or damaged areas depend on seam allowance, construction and fabric condition, so they are assessed in person first.
The options depend on fabric, seams, lining, structure, existing damage and the amount of material available inside the garment — which is why work and price are confirmed only after the garment has been checked.

An alteration may be declined or discouraged where there is not enough seam allowance left, the material has stretched or frayed, the damaged area cannot support new stitching, the change would distort the original shape, decorative details block access to the seam, or the likely cost outweighs the likely result. Where that is the case, it is explained before any work is agreed.

Common tailoring work includes shortening, taking in, letting out where suitable, sleeve work, zip repairs, button work, seam repairs and lining adjustments.
Hems and shortening
Trousers, dresses, skirts and shirts where the finished length needs changing. The method depends on material, lining and existing hem — a plain trouser hem differs from a curved dress hem or a decorative original finish.
Taking in and letting out
Garments are normally taken in through available seams at the waist, side seams or centre back; lined clothing usually needs the lining adjusted as well as the outer fabric. Letting out is possible only where sufficient seam allowance remains. Many modern garments have narrow allowances, and a previous alteration may have used the material already.
Sleeves, shoulders and structured garments
Sleeves may be shortened or narrowed where construction allows. Shoulder work is more involved: it affects the sleeve head, armhole, collar and the overall balance of the garment, so it is priced and assessed separately.
Zips, buttons, seams and linings
A broken fastening does not mean an otherwise wearable garment needs replacing. A zip fault may originate in the slider, teeth, tape, stitching or the fabric around it, so the item is inspected before deciding between repair and replacement. Explain the garment, what feels wrong, and any event date or deadline. Photographs may help Lynda understand the issue, but the alteration method and firm price can only be confirmed after inspecting the garment.
Bring the complete outfit
Where one garment affects another, bring both: the shirt worn under a suit jacket, the layers worn under a coat.
Assessment and pinning
The garment is examined for fit, balance, hem position, seams, lining, zip condition and fabric behaviour, then pinned or measured as needed.
Approve the work and price
Both are confirmed before anything is cut. Where an alteration is not advisable, that is explained first.
Collection and payment
A collection time is arranged when the work is agreed. Payment is taken on collection.
